Stop Log Training: Safe, Simple, Effective

Mastering Water Control with Stop Logs: Training for Precision and Safety

Managing water flow in flood control, irrigation, and industrial systems demands precision, safety, and reliability. That’s why stop logs remain a trusted solution for temporary or seasonal water level adjustments. To get the most out of this versatile equipment, it’s essential to follow proper handling and installation procedures. All made easier when working with Whipps, Inc. 500 Series Stop Logs, designed for performance under pressure.

Whipps, Inc. has developed a complete training program to help operators, engineers, and facility managers install, remove, and maintain stop logs with confidence. Our custom-fabricated 500 Series Stop Logs are built to meet the rigorous demands of real-world applications. And we’ve made it easier than ever to use them safely and effectively.

What Are Stop Logs, and Where Are They Used?

Stop logs are stackable water control elements inserted into a frame to temporarily block or redirect water flow. Unlike sluice gates, they are manually placed and do not include a top seal. Each log is positioned within a guide frame lined with UHMW seals for minimal leakage and easy handling.

Commonly used in flood control, dam operations, and irrigation channels, stop logs allow for flexible control over water levels and system isolation. Their modular nature makes them ideal for facilities where conditions change seasonally or where temporary shutdowns are needed for maintenance or upgrades.

Types of 500 Series Stop Logs

The 500 Series includes several models tailored to different operational needs:

  • 509 & 510 – Lightweight aluminum models ideal for low-head applications
  • 511 & 529 – Heavy-duty logs designed for higher pressures
  • 519 & 529 (Bulkhead logs) – Built for high-flow systems using a combination of stop logs and slides

All logs are fabricated from aluminum or stainless steel with UHMW seals and can be lifted manually or with an optional log lifter tool.

Why Choose Whipps 500 Series Stop Logs?

Each stop log is engineered for lightweight handling, reliable sealing, and long-term durability. Here are just a few reasons facilities across the country trust Whipps:

  • Quick, tool-free installation
  • Low leakage rates—within AWWA standards
  • Easy storage with provided racks
  • Corrosion-resistant materials for long service life

Safe Handling and Installation Practices

To maximize efficiency and protect operators, Whipps recommends the following safety steps:

  • Always wear PPE, including gloves and steel-toe boots
  • Lift logs using proper posture; bend your knees, not your back
  • Clear debris from the frame before installation
  • Insert logs bottom-up, aligning seals and tapping lightly into place

Using a Whipps stop log lifter can reduce fatigue and improve safety during frequent installations and removals.

Leak Testing and Performance Checks

Once installed, logs should undergo a visual and low-pressure inspection to ensure no bypass or improper seating. Regular checks during operational cycles help verify system integrity and identify wear before it becomes an issue.

Removal, Maintenance, and Storage Tips

Stop logs should be removed in reverse order (from top to bottom) cleaned, and inspected for damage before storage. Proper maintenance includes:

  • Dry storage using the provided rack
  • Inspecting and replacing worn seals
  • Lightly oiling components stored in humid conditions

Resolving Common Stop Log Challenges

Even high-performance systems experience occasional issues. Here are a few that operators may face:

  • Leakage: Misaligned or damaged seals—reseat logs or replace seals
  • Difficult insertion: Debris or warped components—clean frame and inspect logs
  • Logs stuck in cold weather:Freezing temperatures—use lubricant and gentle tapping to free them
