With Stainless Steel water control equipment, Whipps, Inc. guarantees superior performance with leakage rates below 0.05 gpm/ft of seal perimeter under both seating and unseating head conditions, surpassing the specifications outlined in AWWA C-501 for Cast Iron Sluice Gates and AWWA C-560 for Cast Iron Slide Gates, even in high head service scenarios. Our fabricated stainless steel gates offer a cost advantage over cast iron gates, as the casting and machining process for cast iron is more expensive. This cost difference increases with gate size. Stainless steel has more than twice the ultimate strength and approximately double the modulus of elasticity of cast iron. Additionally, stainless steel exhibits superior corrosion resistance. Our gates feature UV-stabilized UHMW seat/seals that maintain their shape and integrity in challenging applications, as proven by rigorous testing involving 25,000 gate open/close cycles in abrasive media. Unlike cast iron gates, our stainless steel gates ensure reliability, as the slide will not ‘freeze’ to the frame after extended periods of inactivity due to the UHMW seat/seals, which eliminate metal-to-metal contact. Furthermore, the fabrication process for stainless steel gates is faster than the casting and machining process for cast iron gates, ensuring quicker delivery times.
